Long overdue update for Joshua

We have been so very busy that I have been unable to keep up with blogs. Tonight I will try and give our update, exciting as always. On July 17, I took Joshua and our 4 year old, Noah, to see an immunologist who specializes in psychoneuroimmunology. I knew our younger child had horrid allergies last year and figured I

How to teach a child to swallow a pill

One hurdle we had to overcome with Joshua was the fact that he was very orally defensive. This means he couldn’t tolerate anything in his mouth. Dental trips were difficult for him though we had an amazing dentist who took his time and worked with Joshua slowly. I learned from our dentist, Dr. Bubenik, that when Joshua was rushed, he

Are PANDAS/PANS related to autism?

When we first went to the psychiatrist, I asked if Joshua had high functioning autism. He had some of the aymptoms. He seemed to perseverate on ideas or toys, he was a very picky eater, he had sleep issues and sensory integrative difficulties. As we have waded in the world of autoimmune issues, I think back to my days of

Antibiotic with PANS/PANDAS

Ok, so Joshua has been on a prophylactic dose of Augmentin for a year and on Sunday, we took him off. We were told that Augmentin has a protective effect and this is why it seems to alleviate symptoms so well. Augmentin is a common antibiotic for PANDAS. Unfortunately, in the past, when we took him off symptoms would return.

After the IVIG to treat PANDAS

So I thought I would write a quick note about symptoms of PANDAS after IVIG…long term. I don’t believe it is a clear cut answer for everyone. At first, I hoped that we would get just one and be done….but that hasn’t been our experience. Everything didn’t just go away though after a few months he was a completely different,

PANDAS symptoms after IVIG

I thought with all this talk of how IVIG works, we should talk about what happens to symptoms of PANDAS after IVIG treatment. Our first IVIG I think I was expecting a slow recovery. I had heard the term “turning back the pages” to describe outbursts of PANDAS symptoms after IVIG. I had read that it could last a few

PANDAS, PANS, and IVIG treatment

I have been getting lots of great emails from people all over the world struggling to get help for their children. I get a lot of questions about PANDAS, PANS and IVIG. IVIG was our choice of treatment for Joshua. One that we feel literally saved his life. Many physicians elude to the fact that it may not be safe

Tests for PANDAS

I thought it may be helpful to review some possible tests that are being used to determine whether or not a child has PANDAS. Though there are many tests for PANDAS to assist in diagnosis, nothing replaces a good history both medically and behaviorally. Rapid strep: A rapid strep is the test used in most pediatricians offices when a child

PANDAS or PANS? What’s the difference?

In February, the white paper for PANS/PANDAS was released. There seemed to be some confusion as to whether the PANDAS diagnosis had been replaced by PANS. In reality, it has not. From what I understand, PANS (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome), is the larger umbrella. PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with strep), falls under that umbrella because we know the
